This press has a most unusual bed-drive. As will be seen in the cut above, the bottom double rack is considerably shorter in length than conventional crank, rod and pinion stop-cylinders and the crankshaft itself (only partly seen) is mounted quite low, indicating that the bottom rack itself is driven back and forth by the crank rod. This in turn meshes with a small diameter double pinion or intermediate bed-drive gear, fixed in adjustable bearings mounted directly underneath the impression cylinder. Either side of this intermediate gear are large flat rollers (bowls) which support the bed directly under the pressure point and on the outside of these bowls are bed drive gears the same diameter which mesh with racks attached to the underside of the bed. On either side are long tracks bolted to the side frames which also support the bed. So a small movement of the bottom rack equals a longer movement of the bed, due to this 'gearing up' principle.
This unique, compact design therefore supported lighter construction - a smaller crankshaft, elimination of supporting undercarriage bed tracks, bowls and bowl frames.
A smaller version, called "Little Kosmos No. 4" strangely, had a conventional 'railway' bed motion.
