Clamshell press. Fixed vertical bed with toggle-activated hinged platen. William Golding, of Boston, USA, founded the business in 1869, manufacturing small table-top presses for hobbyists. Encouraged by sales, he introduced his larger commercial 'Jobber' series to the trade in 1880. This comprised the 4 sizes (as above) plus the 'Art Jobber' series No. 18 and 21 which were more sturdily constructed and incorporated an advanced inking system. The advertisement states 'all three rollers clear the forme, and, as an aid, the Duplex distributing roller, under the bed, can be used.' (This was a feature of the 'Art Jobber' which enabled additional  ink distribution on the return stroke). American Type Founders acquired the company in 1918 and continued production until 1927.
A popular press in the USA.
